Can ChatGPT calculate your BMI and body fat?

People ask ChatGPT to work out their BMI and body fat every day. It will always answer, confidently, with a number. The honest question is whether that number is right. The short version: BMI usually yes, body fat often no.

Can ChatGPT calculate BMI?

Mostly, yes. BMI is a single formula, weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared, so a language model can reproduce it. Two things still trip it up:

  • Units. Give it pounds and feet and it has to convert first. Small slips there change the result.
  • Meaning. It returns a number and a category, but BMI on its own cannot tell muscle from fat. A lean, muscular person and an unfit person can share the same BMI.

So ChatGPT can give you the BMI digit. It is less reliable at telling you what that digit actually means for your body.

Body fat is where it gets shaky

There is no single body fat formula. There are several methods, and they need different inputs:

  • The U.S. Navy method uses your height, neck and waist (and hips for women).
  • The Deurenberg estimate uses BMI, age and sex.
  • Skinfold methods need caliper readings.

Ask ChatGPT for your body fat without giving it those inputs and it has to pick a method, assume the missing measurements, or estimate from BMI alone. Ask twice and you can get two different answers. That is not a reliable basis for tracking progress.

A confident wrong number is worse than no number. If you are going to track body composition over time, the method has to be the same every time.

Why a real tool beats a guess

A calculator runs the same established formula every time, with cited sources, and shows the metrics BMI misses. Here is the practical difference.

Make ChatGPT accurate: connect the MCP

You do not have to choose between the assistant and a real calculator. The BMI Kit MCP server plugs BMI Kit's calculator engine straight into ChatGPT or Claude. Once connected, the assistant calls a real tool instead of guessing, and answers with BMI, body fat, FFMI and waist to height, plus the sources behind them.

A prompt like "give me the honest body composition picture for 180 cm, 85 kg, 35, male, waist 95 cm" then returns computed numbers, not an estimate.

Or just use the calculators

If you would rather not connect anything, the calculators do the same maths in your browser. Start with your BMI, then add your body fat percentage to see the fuller picture.
